Is Laser Hair Removal Permanent? What to Expect

The Short Answer

Laser hair removal is best described as a long-term hair reduction treatment rather than a permanent hair removal solution. While it dramatically reduces hair growth — most patients see a 70 to 90 percent reduction after a full series of treatments — some fine or light hairs may persist or gradually return over time. Occasional maintenance sessions can keep these in check. At Pure Vitality Med Spa in Locust, NC, we use advanced laser technology to deliver safe, effective results for a wide range of skin types.

How Laser Hair Removal Works

Laser hair removal targets the melanin (pigment) in the hair follicle. When the laser energy is absorbed by the pigment, it converts to heat and damages the follicle, inhibiting or delaying future hair growth. This is why the treatment works best on hair that is actively growing and contains sufficient pigment.

Hair grows in three phases: anagen (active growth), catagen (transitional), and telogen (resting). The laser is only effective during the anagen phase, when the hair is attached to the follicle and contains the most melanin. Since not all hairs are in the same phase at the same time, multiple treatment sessions are necessary to target each hair during its active growth cycle.

How Many Sessions Do You Need?

Most patients require six to eight treatment sessions, spaced four to eight weeks apart depending on the treatment area and hair growth cycle. Smaller areas like the upper lip or underarms may respond more quickly, while larger areas like the legs or back may require the full series.

After completing the initial series, many patients enjoy months or even years of smooth, hair-free skin. When regrowth does occur, the hair is typically finer, lighter, and much less noticeable than before. One to two maintenance sessions per year are usually sufficient to maintain optimal results.

What to Expect During Treatment

Modern laser technology has made the treatment much more comfortable than many patients expect. You may feel a mild snapping sensation, similar to the snap of a rubber band against the skin. Most areas are very tolerable, and treatment times are surprisingly quick — underarms take just a few minutes, while larger areas like the legs may take 30 to 45 minutes.

You will be given protective eyewear, and a cooling gel or device may be used to keep the skin comfortable throughout the treatment.

Pre-Treatment and Aftercare Tips

Before your session: Shave the treatment area one to two days before your appointment. Avoid waxing, plucking, or threading for at least four weeks prior, as these methods remove the hair follicle that the laser needs to target. Stay out of direct sun and avoid self-tanners for two weeks before treatment.

After your session: The treated area may appear slightly pink or feel warm, similar to a mild sunburn. This typically resolves within a few hours to a day. Apply a soothing aloe-based gel and avoid hot showers, saunas, and intense exercise for 24 hours. Wear SPF 30 or higher on treated areas exposed to the sun.
