How to Prepare for Your First Hydrafacial

What Is a Hydrafacial?

The Hydrafacial is one of the most popular non-invasive skin treatments available today, and for good reason. This multi-step procedure cleanses, exfoliates, extracts impurities, and hydrates the skin simultaneously — all without the discomfort or downtime associated with more aggressive treatments. At Pure Vitality Med Spa in Locust, NC, our licensed estheticians customize every Hydrafacial to address your unique skin concerns.

Pre-Treatment Preparation

Pause active skincare ingredients: In the 48 hours before your appointment, avoid using retinol, retinoids, glycolic acid, salicylic acid, and other strong exfoliating products. These can increase skin sensitivity and may cause unnecessary irritation during the treatment.

Avoid excessive sun exposure: Try to minimize direct sun exposure for at least 48 hours before your Hydrafacial. Sunburned or significantly tanned skin can be more sensitive during the treatment. If you must be outdoors, wear a broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher.

Skip waxing and laser treatments: Do not wax, thread, or undergo laser treatments on your face for at least one week prior to your Hydrafacial. These procedures can compromise the skin barrier and lead to increased sensitivity.

Come with a clean face: While your esthetician will cleanse your skin as part of the treatment, arriving with minimal makeup makes the process more efficient and comfortable.

Stay hydrated: Drinking plenty of water in the days leading up to your appointment supports overall skin health and helps your skin respond optimally to the hydrating serums used during the treatment.

What to Expect During the Treatment

A Hydrafacial typically takes 30 to 45 minutes and involves three core steps. First, cleansing and gentle exfoliation remove dead skin cells and surface debris. Next, a painless suction-based extraction process clears out pores without the discomfort of manual extractions. Finally, nourishing serums containing antioxidants, peptides, and hyaluronic acid are infused into the skin for deep hydration.

Most patients describe the experience as refreshing and comfortable — some even compare it to a light massage for the face. There are no needles, no harsh chemicals, and no pain.

Post-Treatment Care

Protect your skin from the sun: Your skin will be fresh and more receptive after a Hydrafacial, which also means it is temporarily more vulnerable to UV damage. Apply SPF 30 or higher daily and avoid prolonged sun exposure for at least 72 hours.

Wait before reintroducing active ingredients: Give your skin 24 to 48 hours before resuming retinol, acids, or other potent skincare products.

Avoid heavy makeup: Let your skin breathe for at least six to twelve hours after treatment. Your skin will already have a healthy glow, so you may not feel the need for foundation at all.

Continue hydrating: Drink plenty of water and use a gentle, hydrating moisturizer in the days following your treatment to maximize and extend your results.

How Often Should You Get a Hydrafacial?

For optimal results, we recommend a Hydrafacial every four to six weeks. This frequency aligns with your skin’s natural cell turnover cycle and helps maintain consistently clear, hydrated, and radiant skin.
